Endplay Question

The tractor is a 46 JD A. On the shaft that comes out of the transmission to where the Driver Disc for the clutch bolts to. Does anyone know how much endplay is suppose to be on that shaft? Also if it is exessive is there a thurst bearing that needs to be changed? I can not get the clutch to "snap" in. All of the clutch parts are new except for the Driver Disc? Thanks for the help.

If your talking about the shaft that the clutch assembly is on that is the right end of the crankshaft not a transmission shaft. To adjust crankshaft end play you move the flywheel in for less end play or out for more. A manual would be very helpful in this situation. Dave

OK. Thanks. I have a manual, but didn"t realize the endplay was so much, and that it effected the clutch. Is that an 1 1/4" socket to remove the flywheel? Or do you know the part number of the wrench? Then I just slide the flywheel in to reduce the endplay??? Thanks again, I"ve been chasing this clutch problem for a while.

If it's an electric start tractor you will need a special wrench to get at the flywheel bolts due to the "dish" shape of the flywheel. Correct endplay should be .005-.010". You will also have to push the crankshaft all the way to the left while sliding the flywheel on to reduce endplay. I use a bottle jack between the right rear tire and the end of the crankshaft to do this if you don't have a helper.
