Engine Block Casting Number

I have a friend who just purchased a ford industrial tractor. The transmission was obviously replaced, so we were hoping to figure out the year of the tractor by the engine casting. It is CONN6015J,
can someone help me with any info on that number?

CONN6015J is the casting number for the block. All it tels you is the year that the block casting was designed, not when it was actually cast. The C0 at the beginning says that the casting was designed in 1960, but that design was used from 1`960 through the end of the production run in 1964, so it could have been made any time from 1960-1964.

There should be other date codes on the various major components that might narrow things down a bit. Look around and post back any numbers you find that look like the picture below and tell us where you found them.

Since I'm sure the tranny was replaced I looked on the rear axle housing and found these numbers: 2M17: then beneath that CONN4024 F

From those numbers, the rear axle should have been cast on December 17, 1962, so the tractor is probably a 1963 tractor.

Hello Sean , I see your still posting incorrect
information on here still after all these years . 4
cylinder tractor production did end until December
of 1965! I posted serial numbers proving that 20
years ago . The CONN6015 J block was cast and
used from 1962-1965 in tractor production and until
1969 in Industrial Engine applications all J blocks
are cast for spin on oil filters . Thanks Tony

Tony,

From the New Holland Parts Site:

4000 - Series - 4 Cyl Ag Tractor (01/62 - 12/64)

They may have made them later than that, but no one will be able to find parts for a 4 cylinder 4000 if they go to a New Holland dealer and say that they have a 1965 4000, as they will not believe that a 1965 4000 is a 4 cylinder model, they will insist that it must be a 3 cylinder model, or else it is a 4 cylinder model made earlier than 1965.

Sean , It still doesnt change the fact that you are
wrong , it doesnt changes the fact that Ford built 4
cylinder tractors all year during 1965 , it doesnt
change the fact that the Ford parts book lists the
1965 serial numbers in the front of it . All you are
doing is making excuses for ignorant parts guys
who are to lazy to do their job , fortunately I havent
had that problem . If thats a problem for you there
is nothing wrong with you telling anyone that they
may run into that problem . When guys call me and
ask why they have a 1965 serial number with 1965
casting dates and everybody tells them they dont
have a 1965 Ford 4 cylinder I tell them you get your
information from sources that do not know what
they are talking about plain and simple . When you
look at 1965 tractors especially transmissions 4 or 5
speeds and the casting date says 3/22/65 or
something similar its pretty hard to for someone to
believe that its not a 1965 . So your theory doesnt
make sense now any more then it did years ago . If
they own a 1965 they own a 1965 your opinion
doesnt change the facts .
