Engine/Castiron Rust Removal

I've finally started the Farmall H clean-up and paint project. I've decided not to sandblast the cast frame and engine block. The engine has been cleaned with oven cleaner and then pressure washed. It has a little of the old paint on it, but is mostly surface rust. How will I remove the rust from areas the wire wheel won't reach? Is OSPHO not recommended for cast? Thanks for any advice.

I don't like using phosphoric acid on cast because it may (or may not) get trapped in the pores. However I do use it in nooks and crannies where the paint lifting does not show. But, I have numerous wire wheel type attachments for an electric drill, most of the time I can get it clean. Also, a little rust on cast, where you can't see it will do no harm, unlike sheet metal. There are very few places on an H you can't get clean, provided you have completely stripped the engine and chassis.

I'm planning on stripping off any parts that'll come off. Some have already been sandblasted and epoxy primed. I drove it home today, about 12 miles, and found a few oil leaks I'll have to take care of, and some steering issues to address. I'm only 5 months behind schedule, so far!

If you encounter any small tight areas that you
still have to remove paint or dirt from after
cleaning with another larger tool like a
grinding wheel or sandblaster, why not
consider a Dremel Moto-tool. They're easy to
maneuver around tight areas and have bits to
handle most anything. It may take a while but
it gets the area clean, Thats one of the many
uses my three get put to, Variable speed,
single speed and cordless. On some things, I'm
a nitpicker about, some things not.

OSPHO whether on cast or sheet metal is better than rust... I'd use the OSPHO if in doubt. Let it dry for several days then scotch-brite off the dried residue. You primer/paint will be fine.
