Engine compatibility?

Anyone know if the 172 head works on the 144? And alternately, if the 144 crank works in the 172?

Are you talking diesel? The gas engines would be 134/172 and the crankshafts are the same, the difference being the bore. Heads are different numbers I believe. Dunno about diesel.

Yes... they have the same stroke.

I looked in the ford repair manual before and saw that the stroke was the same. But have never had a 144 apart so wasn’t sure if the saddles and thrust were all the same. Thanks!! Do you know if the heads are interchangeable?

Im not 100% sure, but I'd say no... combustion chambers are apt to be different.

The parts site shows the 134 and 172 gas engines share the same part numbers for the crank shaft and the head, E2JL6300BA for the crank shaft and D3JL6049A for the head.

Also, the The 144 and 172 diesel engines show the same part number for their crankshafts, E2JL6300BA, but 2 separate part numbers for their heads:

144 head - D0NN6049F
172 head - D7JL6049A
