engine cuts out

Finally got my 8n running really good. been working on it all winter, Hooked it up to my 5 foot bush hog and it handled it ok but when it was warmed up it would raise the cutter but would not keep it raised and it would drop down as long as the pto was engaged it would stay up. I guess I know what is next in line to repair. Never had the lift mechanism apart so I better read up. I checked the archives and there seems to be a few folks with the same problem,

First, is there enough hydraulic oil in the system? I have to ask the simple obvious questions first. Put the control lever in 'POSITION', that is straight up. Next, with a load on the 3-pt - your mower will do fine - raise it all the way up with touch control quadrant control and leave it. Shut down tractor engine. Observe how long it takes for the load to drop down to the ground. A good system will keep a load sustained for weeks, months even. If load drops within minutes or overnight, your problem is in the cylinder -it leaks. Next test is to remove side cover inspection plates, start engine, raise load up and shut down tractor. Grab your MINI-MAG penlight and get on the ground and look up under the top cover where the cylinder is bolted to and observe if you see oil leaking down from the piston. If so, it's time to do a rebuild. I wrote an article on basic hydraulic repair for the 8N and it is available for FREE download on the other Ford N-Series Tractor web site. Email me for directions as they won't let us post that info here for some unknown reason.
