engine cuts out

sorry to post this here, was the only place that fit, I have a 1988 GMC truck with a 5.7 engine. When the truck idles all is fine revs great. When I am driving down the road, the engine will go so far, then just cut out and backfire, if I ease back into the acceleration, it will accelerate to a point and kick out again. I have installed a new fuel filter, added several carb cleaners, and sea foam. Where do I go next? Thank you for any help.

sounds like an ignition problem...check the plugs, plug wires, dist. cap and rotor..

Check the distributor, including the shaft, it might be loose.

Check insulation on the wire to the coil for a bare spot. I had a 66 chevy that the throttle linkage wore thru the insulation. Mild throttle it did not have a problem. Full throttle it contacted the bare spot and shorted out the ignition.
Also open the hood at night and have someone load the engine to see if the wires are sparking causing the plugs not to fire.
