engine issues

[first 8n]

tractor was running fine. Let it sit for maybe 4 days, try to start it and it wont fire. Eventually get it to start and just assume it was being stubborn again. Ran fine for maybe a minute then just died.Same thing after letting it sit till the next day. Finally fired and died. Checked plugs, fire, fuel, all the usual. Things appear to be fine. Any advice from more experienced N owners?

If it still has spark after it dies, you have a fuel or fuel-flow issue. Not as much gas in the tank as you think, perhaps?

How did you check the fire. Did you gap a plug 3/16 to 1/4 inch, ground it to a paint free spot on the head? Should jump the gap with strong blue fire-not yellow. Did U remove the plug in the bottom of the carb. bowl to see that you have a steady flow of gas through the carb.? Let it flow a minute or more. Should be a strong flow, not a drizzle. Please check these things and report back.

I have already added more gas. Dont have the time to check the other things tonight since i got home late from work. I will try the things suggested as soon as I get home tonorrow. Thank you all for the very quick advice. I will report as soon as I get a chance to try it again. You guys are the best!

I only got as far as removing the plug in the bottom of the carb. There was some gas that came out but only maybe enough to drain the bowl. I guess a carb rebuild is the next step to clean everything out?

Check for gas flow TO the carb.should be steady full pipe stream to the top of the carb. If not, then the screen filter in the tank or the screen filter in the on/off valve glass bowl is stopped up..If good flow to the carb, check the screen filter that screws into the side of the carb where the gas line connects to the carb..It sticks up inside the carb,,,If all this is open and good flow to the carb, then yes, tear it down--I be tU can just clean it out good and be good to go..Full rebuild ain't necessary every time you turn around....like some do. My Dad has and I have cleaned out several several, many times over the yrs..just clean it out, blow it out good and usually you back on the "row" again..

I did check the flow to the carb. The line seems to be clear. I will try to clean the screen at the fuel line tomorrow. I wasnt even aware there was a screen where the fuel line went into the carb. Thanks again for the help and thanks for being patient with me getting back to you.

I cleaned the screen and it fired right up. it did stop running after a bit so i assume i have some trash coming loose in the fuel system. Ill have to work that out when i have the time. Thank you all for the help in getting me on the right track with this.
