Since I seem to have a fuel leak into my 1520 s oil pan when I get this fixed I will definitely need an oil change. What do YOU all recommend for oil? I know everything says use John Deere tough guard or plus 50- but is that really necessary on a tractor of this vintage? I don t have a problem paying the extra bucks if it really makes a difference- but I have found on many other things throughout life that most of the time it just a manufacturer trying to make more money! Does this John Deere oil have anything special in it that makes it better than rotella or delo 400?

I've used Delvac 15-40 for years in my 1520 and 301, it doesn't use any and has worked great. I'm sure Rotella would also work fine because it's the same make up as Delvac.

I will go on record stating that the brand of oil you choose is probably irrelevant. Now, keeping the oil full is of utmost importance. More engines have been ruined by lack of oil than by what brand was being used. YMMV. :D

Like Mike, I have been using Delvac 15-40 for many, many years without problems though I have started using JD 15-40 in my 4555 mostly because the farm store where I was getting the Mobil oil has changed hands and I haven't seen any really good deals on Delvac lately. I think Rotella would be a good second choice as it is readily available here.
