Hey guys I've got a question for you about 806 engine oil. I am new to the I H gang and was wandering why the engine oil in it is called low ash 30w oil. What is the reason for this? Are they prone to get alot of sludge in the engine? It has a gas engine if that makes any differance. Thanks, bunghammer.

I read a web-site...you have to go there. It's for Farmall H but has many links including "more that you want to know about oil". This talks about low ash oil, deturgent and non etc...It's gr8! www.farmall-h.com good luck!

IH low ash oil in straight wts is no lower in ash than other oils on the market. It is recommended By many, including the Tractor Vet and myself, on these engines. Checking the manufacturers specification on ash content (probably not on the can, but on their web sight) can be very informative. Synthetic oil has basically no ash, so that is a great option. I do not know how the Tractor Vet feels about synthetic oils. JimN

Low ash oil is for the gasoline engines only. Do not use it in the
diesel engines.

The reason for using low ash oil in the gasoline engines is that
they are prone to carbon buildup on the exhaust valve stems.
This can cause the vale to stick open which burns out the valve.
IH Low Ash Oil is .5% ash.

IH Diesel oils are about 2% ash. The ash content is to counter the
sulfur in the unburned fuel that enters the crankcase. The higher
the ash content the longer the engine can go between oil
changes.

Low ash oils are usually listed as oil for LPG engines. LP does not
leave fuel residue in the crankcase so they do not need the ash
to stop acid build up in the oil.

thanks for the info! How come deere tractors don't worry about this in there engines? I grew up around deeres and all we ever used was plain old 30w in our gas 3020. That is why I asked about it. My brother's 806 also has a spin on engine oil filter. This isn't original is it? When I went to get an oil filter for it they gave me two cartridge style filters.

More likely then not the "the plain old 30w" had the same/similar amount of sulfated ash as the advertised Low Ash 30W IH oil. Quality brands such as Castrol GTX actually have less sulfated ash then the IH oil, Penzoil has the same and other lesser brands have slightly more. While the IH oil is of good quality its a bit deceptive the way they harp on about their "low ash" quality.

Remember low bidder fills the IH bottles.

As mentioned below low ash oil is only for gas tractors, diesel engines need the higher sulfate ash levels.

Case/IH buys all their lubricanta FL Viscosity Oil Company and the VL Viscosity web sites shows all Case/IH oils 10, 30, 10-30 and 15-40 weight to contain 1.40/1.45% sulfated ash. Viscosityoil.com>>Products>>Case-Akcella>>view case products in PDF>>General lubricants>>page 1E3 and 1E8.

I did not read far enough on page 10E a low ash .5% sulfated ash oil is listed as posted below also .9% sulfated ash automotive oil.
