engine paint?

Hello all..First of all I enjoy this forum very much you guys know your onions. From you guys experiance what is a good durable engine spray paint?I have the engine for my jubilee squeeky clean and hate to cheep out on paint.Thank you much......W.Kimberly

ohio jubie.......would you believe everyone uses regular castiron enamel paint??? Unfortunately the HOT exhaust manifold will burn most engine enamel. So iff'n yer sphincterly challenged, use BAR-B-QUE paint for exhaust manifold. Simple, eh? .......Dell, yer 20/20 painter, (looks good at 20ft or 20mph)

Use a good quality primer first(not rattle can)then I would use the paint from your local New Holland dealer,I've had good luck with that and a hardner added, your manifold needs a high temp paint to keep it looking good or one of the coatings like Jet Hot will last best. Just my 2 cents worth.

Here is how I paint the engine and chassis on tractors.
Pressure was the heck out of them. Then brush on liquid Tide clothes soap with a brush and let it soak for a while. Then pressure wash again.
When it is dry in a day or so I go after any loose or flaking paint with a couple of sizes and shapes of wire wheel. Then I use lacquer thinner rather generously and a couple of scrub brushes and scrub the whole thing down.
Then I spot prime with a rattle can just where it is down to bare metal. Most of the chassis doesn't need any primer.
Finally I have been using Valspar's Restoration Series paint - with a hardner and shoot the whole thing with an automotive spray gun.
I have sprayed chassis parts with rattle cans before and the finish just does not last.
Photo below is of a tranny and rear end I painted this summer. It had a better shine before but has sat in a dusty, dirty shop for a a week before I snapped this photo. The finish will stay nice for a long time if you use a hardner.

Exhaust components can be powder coated with a high temperature coating that will not burn off. Somewhat expensive though.

What are your intentions for this tractor - Will it be a show tractor or a worker?

Unless you're using latex house paint, just about anything that is available now days will exceed the quality of OEM paint.

I'd paint the engine with the same paint used on the rest of the tractor. Heat on the cases is not a factor. The only difference between "engine enamel" and regular enamel is the label - Contents of the can are the same.

I repainted my barn queen with spray can Rustoleum because I was doing it in increments and wanted the convenience on not having to constantly clean up a spray gun. I'm satisfied with it.

It's garaged and if it were to sit outside all the time, I realize the paint will fade.

If you have the proper equipment to spray two part paint, you'll be immensely happier with the durability.

Follow Ultradog's recommendations on painting and you'll never look back with regret. Prime only where there's bare metal - Anywhere else is a waste of paint unless you're planning to fill in the dimples and wet sand it smooth.
