Engine plug repair

Hi

My ih624 has been sitting for a couple of years. Started it and it ran for a few seconds. White smoke. Cant start it again. Found out it had no coolant. I remember i drained it. Put new water in and it is leaking heavely from radiator bottom and from an engine plug behjnd the water pump. The plug has been pushed out.
Can I get that in without taking off the pump? Do I need new plug? How DO I get the pump off. Is it even worth trying?
If it is frost damage, isnt it likely there damage elsewhere in the engine block.

Well, I agree it's freeze damage. I would not hesitate to remove a water pump, so you can clean the freeze plug bore. Any time access is questionable, I recommend removing whatever is in the way, as long as it's feasible to do so. And you're right- there may be more damage. All that being said, while the pump should be fairly easy, that might be the timing cover behind it, in front of that freeze plug, which may be a big job. I looked on Messick's to see a parts breakdown, but they do not list a 624. Mark.

Yes, I think it is the timing cover. Looks like a job too big for me.

you have 2 choices, pull the head or strip the front. plus check all the other frost plugs.

624 had a German D-206 Diesel engine, I believe that is the frost plug in the head that has popped.

Look at the left side of the engine block. There are also cooling jacket expansion plugs there. Look at parts number 31 in the link. CNHI IH 624 engine diagrams Look for cracks on the side of the engine block. The cylinder head also has an expansion plug in the back side as well. Change the linked page to diagram 08-14 to view the cylinder head diagram. I am sure you’re aware that putting straight water into any machine that might be exposed to freezing temperatures is not a good idea, it may turn Into an expensive lesson.

It was drained from the engine drain tap and perhaps also from the radiator and was left empty untill now. So how it woukd get damage from freezing I dont know. The little water left should have room to expand

Unfortunately, it is possible the damage was unknowingly done before it got drained. Or the drain plugged before it was completely empty. My point is if you put water in a machine that may be exposed to freezing temperatures you are taking a risk. Unfortunately the human memory is not a 100 percent perfect and there is the “busy” factor “I really need to drain that water out of that tractor, but I also need to harvest this crop etc.”

That plug is very easy to see in the OP ‘s first post , it’s popped out. As I said better check all plugs.

Yeah, that is in the head, and why I did not say,' pull the head' (much easier than the timing cover), I don't know. Oops. Mark.

Suggest you Do leak down test before you do any tear down ! Finding issues to correct is far cheaper way to go.
