Engine rebuild kit,

DiamondIntl

New User
hello everyone, I have a 8n 1950 ford tractor. A guy i know has told me that i have low compression. So i am going to rebuild the whole engine and was wondering which kit i would need to buy. Iam going for the whole inside including new sleeves, rings, bearing main & rod. ect. I just dont know if it like .40 or .90 type??

I have not broke the engine down yet so i dont know much about the inside of the engine.

You are going to need to disassemble it in order to see what you need. Will have to mic the crank to determine what bearings you will need. Same with the sleeves.

When dealing with an antique, this is likely not the first rebuild. There is no way to tell from the outside what you might have in there. Lots of kits show up on ebay cheap when somebody bought the wrong stuff.

before you tear it down, verify the compression numbers. these little motors are only 6.5 to 1 to start with, it could be sticky valve or may be a whole bunch of other issues that are cheaper to fix. is it not running? smoking? low on power? if diagnosed correctly, you can turn a $1,000 dollar job into a 5 dollar job.

DiamondIntl.......given the choice, choose the 0.090 CASTIRON sleeve. They SEAL better with modern chrome-plated rings. Yeah, you'll haffta bore the block to fit the larger diameter castiron sleeve. Boring a block is common engine machineshop procedure fer yer BelchFire-V8. Notta big deal.

Unfortunately, you'll never know without disassembling the engine. You can look up the block sleeve skirts (shame on you) and judge whether you have the skinny 0.040 (thin as dime) or the more better thicker castiron 0.090 (thick as nickle) Simple, eh?

As fer bearing sizes, again determine after disassembly and with MICROMETER. Check for journal roundness and journal taper. DON'T MIX the bearing caps. ........Dell

I dont know the compres numbers a guy did it for me and he didnt tell me what they were. This is my first tractor to fix or even to start a rebuild on. Also my tractor smarts are very low. Just trying to turn this old tractor into a deer food plot maker! but i have rebiuld two car motors so should be the a bit the same.

Just dont know if i have bad rings or bad everything inside...Sucks b/c i just spent alot of money on a rewiring and alt. kit for it.

autozone or O'reillys should have a loan a tool program to get a compression checker---put down money and get it refunded when you return the tool. if not try harbor freight. could save you trouble--these tractors run about 100-120 on compression. the wet and dry tests will let you know what is going on. just for giggles put some automatic transmission fluid into each sparkplug hole---let it sit a few days--if it is a stuck ring or valve, this could fix it.

also may be helpful to google ( how to read sparkplugs) the color and condition of your plugs might give you a direction to try. hope this helps. if you end up having to rebuild the motor--there are plenty of resources available-

ok, ya im probably going to rebuild it anyways because i want this tractor to last a while. Plus iam the kind of person that like things done the correct way.

I have been asking around today and ran up on someone that is saying that my 1950 does not have sleeves in it.. I dont know b/c i cant break down yet. the tractor is not at my house..

Anyone know of a company that works on 8n in North MS,

If you have rebuilt 2 car motors this little 4 cylinder flat head will be a piece of cake. It doesn't take long to get a kit, so you can tear it down first. Once you get it apart you can have the crank checked at a machine shop, it may need turned and that will determine the bearing oversize you need. You also need to know the size of the oil pump, there are a couple sizes. I chose to have the head milled due to dings, but be careful, there is not much clearance there. I also had the machine shop remove the old valves and put the new one's in. They also removed the old sleeves and installed the new ones. The rest of the assemble is easy. There are some basic videos that can be helpful for the layman.
