engine sleeve

i was currius if there was anything special about the steel that sleeves are made of. i wondered if by taking a heavy walled pipe and lathing down the OD dimensions to fit my aplication while keeping the counter bore ridge. then hone the ID diameter to match my piston bore. is this possible or is sleeve steel special?

i was just currius. iv heard of a person that welded a hydraulic cylinder into a john deere block to get as large of a bore as he could. and i just didnt know if anyone else has tried this?

Sometimes those JD blocks w/ the hydraulic tube cylinders work fine....sometimes they dont. Some hold water, some leak water. Sometimes the rings seat in the bore fine, sometimes they never will.

The only real advantage to those type of blocks is they are "cheap" to do. "Cheap" if you get a good one, a black hole to throw money into if you dont.

You can buy about any size sleve that you want .Just find the right web sight

most cylinder sleeves are cast iron. most cylinder blocks are cast iron. like materials will usually have like expansion rates. with steel sleeves do you know what piston clearence to run?
