Have a 1945 john deere A hand start.used the tractor in november drain water out of engine before storing for winter went to start yesterday and was locked up put transmission fluid in cylenders set for 24hr and broke free what would cause this when was in side and in dry place.

Sounds like it could have sweated a little, and formed a little rust on the rings. Might want to fog it next year, if your going to store it in the same place.

It is called condensation and will happen any place that is not climate control as in keeping the themps at one set area and keeping the humidity down. Easy way to keep that from being a problem is to when parked pour a little oil ATF or some such thing in the cylinders and spin it over once or twice so as to coat the cylinders

Our 35 A used to do that too. Dad would park it in the shed and drain it in November after it did duty on the belt running the elevator. In the spring it'd be locked up so he'd put a crowbar in the flywheel and break it loose.

I still have that A but now there's anti-freeze in it year-round and it doesn't lock up in the winter anymore. I kind of wonder if the water/anti-freeze in the block and head slows down the temperature change in the spring, making for less condensation in the cylinders. Just a guess. It has sat in the same spot in the same shed for winter storage for the last 60 years. Jim
