Welcome to the forums.

Not always, but in many cases new users have to have 5 or more posts on record before the site lets them post pictures (or links), due to site spam filters. Another option is to go down to the Site Comments Forum and ask YT Support for permission to post prior to that. You can try going down to the Test Forum and making several posts there to get your post count up, trying to attach your pictures to each post. That may work after you make several posts. Then make your post here again. It may not work immediately after you get past the 5 posts, if not, you might try logging out and back in at that point. There is a size limit as well, I think it is a total of 7mb per post (be it one picture or the total of several). Some pictures (often taken with phones) are too large and have to be reduced before they will post.

Replacing points and condensors isn't rocket science. When I
started driving 55 years ago it was a common practice to
annually do a tune-up. Points, cond. rotor, cap, distributor,
plugs and sometimes wires..

Are the points still used in the electronic upgrade?
I remember the first generation electronic ing. used the points
to turn a transistor on and off..

I'm old school. How many points and cond can you buy for the
price of converting to electronic ign?

A couple of things to consider...

How much does this get used, and how important is it that it runs?

Good points about points:

They are simple and usually can be made to run in an emergency.

They are relatively inexpensive and generally available locally.

Bad points about points:

Points do not like sitting unused for extended periods of time, they tend to corrode and not make
contact when it's time to run again.

Points do not like worn distributor shaft bearings/bushings. They will not stay set, which will cause
erratic performance and short point life.

All points, condensers, and related ignition parts are now foreign made and are known to be poor quality
or bad out of the box. Even though the points you have may have lasted 20 years, don't expect that from
the new ones. Never discard a good, working condenser!

The Pertronix kits are very reliable and well made, with excellent customer service. They will last
indefinitely when properly installed and the proper coil or coil/resistor combo is used. If the coil you
have is working with points, it will work with the conversion kit.

The kit is forgiving of a worn distributor, but the centrifugal advance still needs to work. If you do
convert, it would be a good time to remove and dismantle the distributor, inspect and lube everything,
put it back like it should be because this should be the last time to deal with ignition problems for a
long time if done properly.

Steve,
Thanks for the advice. My situation is someone put this in a forklift that I use almost everyday. So make and model doesn't work to order parts. So with Pertronics, I wouldn't know what to order. Any advice?

THanks

I had a '77 Toyota Celica new (Ford Mustang fastback copy, 5 on the floor, with their 4 cyl. 29R dual OHC engine. It was fired as you say. The problem with that design was that the base current driving the transistor was not strong enough to keep the points clean. Every once in awhile it would stop running. I'd coast to the side of the road, pop the cap and rotor, using a business card, burnish the points, put it back together, hit the starter and be on my way. That was the car that 4 kids tried to tear up and none were able to. Tough little sucker.
