I was always told the the quickest way to spot a 9N/2N engine is that it has the head mounted with studs. 8N has bolts.

I am seeing answers that some say the 8N's have a stud on them..Can anyone tell me which position, on the head, has a stud and why ??

Thanks..

Ken.........Ford no longer supplies studs and nuts. They recommend and supply BOLTS. (grade-5 is good and grade-8 is overkill) Iff'n yer sphincterly challenged, you kenn supply yer own studs and nuts. Doorman sell'em at NAPA. 7/16x2-3/4 but 7/16x2-1/2 will usually work. Make certain yer corner boltholes are "Q-tipped" clean 'cuz they kenn hydraulically BREAK the the corner of the block. Install yer bolts starting in the center and spiral outwards in 3-steps to 60-ft/lbs. Also use BRASS NUTS on yer exhaust manifold studs, torque 27-ft/lbs......the tite Dell

Well, I guess that is to be expected, since "Ford" doesn't supply ANYTHING for tractors anymore.

Gotta go to the FIAT dealer for "official" parts, don't 'cha know?

olts & studs can be swapped, so using that as an engine or head identifier (9/2N, 8N) would be a poor identification method. Several more reliable differences.

Early 8N engines had studs just like the 9N-2N. The 8N engines (except for the very early ones) have "8N" cast into the block area by the starter. 9N-2N engines don't have that.

Also,8N engines also have the timing hole on the right side of the bell housing,9N and 2N engines have no timing hole.

ll 8Ns?

And then, New Holland became owned by FIAT.

As to Ford, they sold 80% of the ag division to FIAT in 1991, and completed the deal in 1999, so it's been 16 or 17 years since "Ford" had anything to do with "Ford" tractors.

 I love telling the diehard red guys that! I tell em it ain't CaseIH it's FIAT! For some unknown reason they seem to have no sense of humor over that!

Then when they try telling me what a piece of junk an N is I point out to them that IH failed in 85 and Ford sold off their share in the AG market and moved on leaving behind a healthy company!
