Entry Level Paint System

I am interested in putting together an entry-level painting system to paint my 1944 Farmall H. I have a large air compressor and hoses, but that is all so far. Any input on what other components I need, external pressure regulator, water separator, etc would be appreciated. Also looking for inexpensive paint gun recommendations. Are HF guns any good?

I've tried a number of water separators over the years and none of them helped. All that has helped me is to open the drain cock enough on the tank to have a slight leak. I've used a lot of cheap and expensive sprayers and I'm currently using this Harbor Freight sprayer. https://www.harborfreight.com/painting/paint-sprayers/32-oz-siphon-feed-spray-gun-56981.html If you are painting a car where you are doing a basecoat/clearcoat it might not spray a metallic basecoat very good but would work fine for anything else.

go to autobody tool mart and look at filters and water separators. check your compressor to see if it pumping oil. drain some of the water in the tank and check. oil is bad for paint. you may need a coalescing filter. depending on your budget, a cam air system would fit the bill. get a new air hose for painting use only.

I'd use an HVLP gun. They don't waste as much paint as a siphon gun.

And the HF purple guns for $14.95 really aren't a bad all around gun. I have 4 or 5. I don't think I;d clearcoat a car or pickup with one, but I wouldn't hesitate to do an H with one. And I have 3 H's that need paint.

Do not over look your own safety items. Paint suit, purchase at the paint store, and a good mask or breathing equipment. I have one of these and very happy with it. I am currently painting a Farmall H also. Be safe and have fun. Dennis
