Hey Gents. I am going to be painting a crawler dozer that has some surface rust and was wondering if spending the money for epoxy type rust inhibitor primer is worth the money? If you think it is then is there a fairly inexpensive brand that can be recomended? Thanks

You are better off removing the rust, then using epoxy primer. I'm not saying it doesn't exist, but I have not heard of rust inhibiting "epoxy" primer.

Don't forget to acid wash to get the little flecks of rust that may still be in there. Phosphoric acid reacts to form iron phosphate which will not deteriorate.

Todd, you are going to have to acid dip, sand blast, wire wheel, strip, ect the rust off. Once you have a good clean part then you can epoxy. If you were to epoxy over what you have now it would just be buried under the epoxy, and its not cool spending money for nothing.
I tried a gallon of Rubber Seal epoxy primer sealer. It was a demo from my jobber store. I love it, it is just like the old DP but there is no induction time, so you can mix and then spray. I think it is like 130.00 ish to make a sprayable gallon. You might see if you can get it I have gone through 7 gallons and not had any problems.
