EV Battery fast chargeing

It is my understanding that paying for the Supercharge option on a Tesla only gets you so many Supercharge events over the life of the battery, because each event stresses the battery. Think about how warm a 5 amp hour tool battery gets, and how long a charge takes. Now think about a Tesla 230 amp hour pack charged in just a few minutes.

In my opinion there are a lot of problems and unanswered questions regarding EV's. Cold weather has a detrimental effect on batteries, Charging stations are few and far between, range on most is under ideal conditions, cost of charging is not a lot less than buying-gas. Thats just a few of them. Here in Maine all of those figure in as well as having the electrical supply available to recharge a whole fleet of EV's. Luckily I don't have a whole lot of years left to deal with it, so I will stick with the internal combustion engine. IMO

Yes, a little bit, just like your phone. Probably not enough to matter though. Most people will slow charge when parked overnight.

With all the interest in EVs here, are a lot thinking of buying one soon?

Thank you NDIHC, but Im afraid you will continue to have those on here who choose to believe what they want to believe. Some are still iving in the good old days and are as hard headed as they come.

Ooops on a Ooops!

Thats the wrong link above. That was a DIFFERENT thoroughly debunked anti-EV photograph. In my defense, there are so many phony and deliberately miscaptioned or misconstrued photographs circulating, its hard to keep track!

Heres the real story (scroll down) on the French EVs:
French fried?

I don't know about soon, a new car isn't a priority right now, but I plan and hope to have one, yes. My daughter in law wants a new car soon, she has considered a new EV, is having a charging station installed in the new house they're building right now, but she said that a plug in hybrid makes more sense to her. She can plug in and drive electric locally, but for longer trips, she wants the option of gas.

In my opinion EV's have to be a cheaper alternative to ICE. But manufactures have made them a luxury vehicle. So quick answer is no. But might look at a plug-in hybrid.

We have to come up with a economical way to produce electricity (fusion instead of fission), better and cheaper batteries (raw material is scarce) and a price that beats ICE. IMHO What is happening now is going to double the cost of power and transportation.

(quoted from post at 04:22:20 04/27/23) So quote replacement prices, tree farmer.

Easily searchable for the Chevy Volt.
List price on the battery is $26K. I have
friends still in gm dealers that have said
their dealers could sell the battery for
about $19K. I guess technically, that's
less than the car was new.

But it's likely more than the car is worth now. Autotrader has several listed in the $10-20K price range. Would make me nervous to have a $15k budget for a car knowing it could need a $19k battery if they still make it when mine dies.

Hey Charles,

Yep! Normal end of charge voltage
for the 18650 Lithium cell is 4.2
volts. It will charge 500 times.

Lower the end changing voltage to
4.1 v, now the battery will charge
1000 times.

Heat is the killer, and high charge
rate will also reduce battery life
for the same reason, heat generated
in the charging process.

Charging the battery @1C usually is
ok, as most cordless chargers will
do just that.

Guido.

Same here, for the same reasons.

I can't recall ever seeing an EV locally, nor do I know anyone who is interested in one.

Another reason that an EV would need a new battery is if it is damaged in an accident. Even a minor collision can scratch the battery and require a replacement or result in a total loss of the vehicle, Reuters reports. Some EV batteries are more easily repaired than others; for example, the Tesla Model Y s battery is integrated into the structure of the SUV, which makes it difficult or impossible to repair.
Average Battery Replacement Costs

If an EV is no longer under warranty or if its battery is damaged in an accident and isn t covered by insurance, Recurrent estimates the out-of-pocket cost for a replacement ranges from $5,000 to $20,000. The total cost largely depends on the pack, size and manufacturer of the battery.

According to J.D. Power, the cost of replacing a battery in the Tesla Model 3 is approximately $13,000, which is over 30% of the sedan s starting price. Recurrent estimates the total cost to replace the Model 3 s battery is around $15,800 when labor is included.

I guess because I can find several reputable news sources that say the same exact thing. I mean, I GUESS they could all be part of an insidious conspiracy....

Please post an article with an alternative explanation!

Currently own a 2023 Chevy Bolt euv. I absolutely love the thing. I am waiting for the local utility provider to install my 220 charger in my shop. For the time being I charge the bolt from the 110 from my house. It's slow, but when I get home at 730ish at night I plug it in. By 4:45 the next morning when I leave for work I have recharged around 30 miles depending upon overnight temps. The 220v 7kwh chargers would replenish my entire battery before morning. Now you asked about the rapid charger station. Chevy has set the max charge rate for my car at 50kwh. It so these rapid charger stations that put out 100+kwh don't do me any good, no matter what my car will only accept up to 50kwh no matter what the charger is capable of pushing out. If you are looking to buy electric, or upgrade a charger for an ev you already have, make sure you get a charger that will match what your ev can take in

Phil Tibbetts,

It is important to differentiate Explains Peter Rawlinson, former Tesla and now Lucid CEO. The small cells are assembled in a finished battery unit which is conditioned to maintain optimum temperature regardless of summer or winter climates outside.
The article also showed the typical sled set-up. It was the battery used on a Volkswagen.

Guido.

Liquid cooled batteries in EV vehicles regulate battery temperature. I'm no big proponent of EVs but have gone through factory training for EV service for an auto manufacturer and will pass on information as it has been told to me. I have no agenda one way or the other. And even with the training I'm not going to pretend to know everything about them. There's still a lot to be discovered as these vehicles age and the miles pile up. Hopefully I'll be retired before EVs become the majority of my service work.
