Everything is a trip hazard

I have been tripping more than I should recently. I read up on tripping,
That is what old people do. One of the suggestions is remove the trip hazards. I might as well just stay inside. Everything around my shop, and tractors is a trip hazard. One thing that might help is stop wearing my heavy work boots. Any suggestions? Stan

I have been tripping on things less than 1" above surface while wearing crocks and Hey Dudes 99.9% of time. The only time I wear boots is using a shovel which isn't often. If someone watched me get off tractors they might think I was seeing a snake on ground. I've known old timers that never recovered from falls. I'll include you in my prayers.

Just a thought, look into hiking shoes. They're lighter & can usually be had with safety toes if you need them. My current "safety toe" shoes are hiking sandals, so I can't help much with any hiking shoe suggestions. I can say I stopped dropping stuff on my feet for the most part & increased my reflexes considerably. Could probably cut a mean rug, too.

A week ago tripped and fell I got stitches in a finger to prove it : (/ I had just pulled a car in to replace a broken tail light, I have AC in the shop I was in a hurry to get the roll up door shut and got my foot caught up in the pull rope. When I turned away from the door the rope tripped me I fell and stuck my finger in the broken tail light.

That was an accident as I have aged I do fall harder it seams I don't have good reactions anymore.

The shop is one big trip hazard. Pick up all air hoses and extension cords. Get small stuff up off the floor if possible.

I too have a tripping problem but with sticks. I step on one end which raises the other end and my other foot trips on it. It's happened so many times I can't count them. I live in the edge of a woods, my yard, workshop, and tractor shed are covered with a tree canopy. Yes I go around and pick up sticks but obviously not often enough. Lawnmower takes care of the little ones. I have to walk around always looking where I step.

It may not be an old thing. A year before I retired, I purchased a new set of work boots. I brought them home with me and have been retired fro two years now. I trip over everything with those boots on. I think the sole must be a little thicker but I have noticed I do trip over everything and catch a toe on the steps, a lot wearing those boots.

Yep, seems I shuffle more than I walk anymore. I seem to trip more often but luckily haven't fallen yet.

My opinion is that it is not so much the trip hazard but the shuffling. I think that a partial solution is walking, purposeful quick walking. You need to get somewhere around 8,000 steps in a day if you want to survive, so if you do it at a pretty good c lip you get it done quickly and your legs get accustomed to picking your feet up.

Two key words to a long, healthy, life.....don't fall!

I stopped wearing my work boots a couple of years ago, for same reasons. A couple of nasty falls and I learned. I'm 80 now and very conscious of where my feet are. My biggest climb up and on issue is with my skiddster............ I wear a pair of high top waterproof tennis shoes which I love, very light and a little supportive. Larry

Awareness is 3/4s of the solution, so you are already ahead of the problem. I tend to shuffle when I am tired or distracted. Leg exercises and lighter shoes help me pick up my feet better. Clearing obstacles out of most used paths helps too.

After a fall last spring I consulted with and got some good professional tips from my doctor. One basic simple one was to be conscious of walking Heel Toe Heel Toe (Lift your feet) because if you drag your feet and shuffle theres a better chance of that dragging foot causing a fall. Im also working on balance exercises for seniors. Vertigo is a somewhat different thing for which there are lots of easy exercises.

John T NOT a doctor of medicine, consult with them is my advice this is ONLY what I experienced

I'm only 71 and have been walking 5 miles a day for 5 years. The only way I can see to stop tripping more is to stop getting older. That's one thing none of us on here seem to inclined to do. I find it incredible how close your feet come to the ground when walking. I swear I can trip over a 1/4" lip.

You omitted your each to their own, everyone do what is best for them disclaimer.

I worked and played in the woods for most of my 74 years. I've been accused of being "elk like" when I walked through the woods. Now I can trip over the cracks sawed into my concrete shop floor. One of the key questions my doctor asks is "have you fallen". Stupid question!! But I guess it's a standard question to gauge your mobility. steve
