Exhaust leak

I have a 52 8n with the side mount dist. and the exhaust is leaking around the manifold.Is this something that will cause major damage if i dont fix it right away?Thank you in advance.

It will eventually erode the block. If you can stand the noise & fumes, you can wait until fall. Assuming you don't put 40 hours a week on the tractor.......

Post back when you're ready to fix it for suggestions.

I'll also add, that, assuming there is no major reosion or pitting already present, that very likely a new gasket and a lil preperation may be all that's needed. if some damage is present, there are a couple 'snake oil' fixes that will likely help.

You probably don't know if this has been a problem with that tractor before. There could have been pitting or some other problem before and someone just stuck in a new gasket. Now the gaskets blown and the situation is getting worse.

What I'm getting at is that an exhaust leak will cause pitting on the manifold or the block. Being that it is such an easy fix, I would not let it go. I would fix it right away before things get worse for you.

yep, ditto what the others had to say. A new gasket set is about 6-7.00 plus maybe shipping. Four bolts and you can be leak free......as long as you get the manifold flat against the surface!

I did the therma-steel repair on the block, new gasket, and 2 dozen hours later it's still holding well.

Since these tractors are so old, one never knows what took place in the last 60 years or what previous owners did. That's why I recommended that he fix it right away since it could have pitting from the previous owner and now with the gasket blown it could resume the pitting.

Your tractor could have been an example of this and why you finally had to resort to the therma-steel. Could have been that a previous owner let it go to long. Something like that that is such an easy fix should not be put off.
