Exhaust Pipe Removal Example

Since I see a lot of questions over the years about how to remove the old, rotten exhaust pipe from the manifolds, I thought I would share the procedure I always use. I am restoring my H right now, and had to refurbish the manifold recently.

Step one...carefully use a Sawzall to cut through the old pipe...this can be done either on or off the tractor. This one happened to be off.

Step two: Make a couple of careful cuts into the threaded area with the sawzall again, being careful not to cut into the manifold if possible. Once done, chisel out the small chunk and the rest will peel right out.

Step 3: Wire wheel, bead blast and scrape, scrub etc... Make sure to clean out the drain holes on the bottom. They are more than likely plugged up! See the difference? Then clean out the threads...use a pipe tap if you have one, or a dremel tool works well too.

Clean it inside and out, I use brake cleaner! Blow it clean so all the glass beads are gone, and reinstall. I don't know what the markings here mean...did I really find an M&W replacement manifold, or are these casting letters from IH?? There was an IH part number on it too. Any thoughts??

Nice photo essay. Try cutting the next one off about 1/4 inch above the manifold. Give you some thing to beat on for easier removal.

Good write-up for those who have to face such a chore. The big trick is to make sure you do not get into the threads. That said, even if you do, there will not be enough damage to affect the function and fit.

Agree with leaving a little more of the pipe. Give some material to chisel and whack on.

And thank you for the part about drain holes. After some 40 years of being around H's, I did not know they were there. Then again, I haven't tore one down before till this January.
