The 9N that I just recently got, came to me with a cracked exhaust. I got a new one off this site with gaskets. Easy install. However I can not get it to seal at the two center ports. I tightened in a sequence like installing a head (tightening from the inside out). I wouldn't think the exhaust surface on the head needs milling (wouldn't think) but I guess it's possible. Am I missing something here or do I need to double gasket the manifold? I truly think the studs are too short to double gasket, but I have been wrong before... Thanks to all of you :)
 

do you mean the manifold? if you get a metal straight edge and put it across the side which fits against the block you should be able to see if it is flat nor not....if it is bowed then I guess you may need to return for new part? I don't think that kind of metal has much flex in it.
also when you took the old one off and the old gasket did you get everything cleaned off perfectly? Might be a bit of old gasket still there stopping it from seating properly?

Broke stud. Drilled, tapped and installed new.

Did you not know that you broke the stud or what?
 
Nope..... Sir, I tightened all. It may not have pulled out while I was tightening. Could have happened while heating up (doubtful) but it did fry. Being 30 years in the gas and diesel industry, you would "assume" that I would notice something so simple. WOOPS......................... Everyone makes mistakes from time to time. Heck look at me..... I got married once. "We learn from our mistakes".....
