F 150 tractor hauler

I normally use my dodge 3500 to pull my JD mowing tractor. If it ever has a problem I use my 05 F150. It's used very seldom. My 05 ford has a starter problem. The starter gear just grinds on the flex plate ring gear. Some call it a flywheel. This doesn't happen maybe every 10 starts. I wonder if the starter gear doesn't extend all the way into the ring gear,on stares or does the ring gear have a bad spot The truck has almost 100 k miles. Anyone experienced this? Stan

No way of knowing if the ring is bad without pulling the starter and looking. A poor connection can do the same thing. The push on connector is a known weak point. You can clean up the connection and apply dielectric grease to help. Rebuilt starters have a pigtail and require you to cut off the spade terminal to solve the problem.

sounds to me like you need a starter bendix. Bendix has maybe 10 teeth and the flywheel has maybe 300 teeth sp if one is worn out I'm betting it is the bendix

I've had the same problem with my F150. A careful inspection of the ring gear showed it in near perfect condition. The over-running clutch in the starter drive had failed. A new starter fixed the problem. My F150 is north of 260k miles.
