F 150

While I stopped at a Stop light a F150 pulled up beside me. This truck looked like a lowrider of 20 years ago.
No step ladder needed to get in. Was this an optical illusion or are new Ford trucks lower to the ground?

I think it might have been a 2 wheel drive.

It didn't appear to be modified and it didn't have any 4x4 morkings.
There wasn't a lot of space between the top of front and rear tires and fender arch.

All it takes is relocating the rear axle from under the spring to over the spring and replacing the front springs with shorter ones. The alignment would need to be reset, Jim

Sure, but reality is that complex, desirable vehicles are unique enough to be popularly created. Jim

I've got an '89 F 150 8 foot box & can reach easily over the
sides anywhere along it.
Got an '06 same model & bed & can't reach into the box
anywhere. Same size tires & all else the same. Guess I'll
have to get a short step ladder.

I've actually considered a lowering kit for my Tundra. It's a 4WD but the parts list for a 2wd is exactly the same. Tundras are kind of unique in that the front springs can be relocated upward, lowering that end. A 'flip kit' puts the axle on top of the springs. I missed a deal on a 'scratch and dent' kit from Tundra Racing and won't pay the retail price.

I can easily reach in the tool boxes of my 2007 GMC 8 ft classic. 2007 was the last year for GM making the classic
The New F150 today looked like the low rider GM classic. That is what caught my eye.
I'll keep an eye out for more new F150 and take a pic.

Lots of aftermarket lowering kits for 2021 to present out there.
$1100 on up for ones that will lower a F150 4 to 6 inches.

Pretty easy and cheap to put a 3"f/5"r lowering kit on a F150. I don't understand why Ford doesn't make a F100 short bed, 2wd with the little 4cyl without turbo. No fender flairs and light axles with something like 205 55x16 tires....James

Trucks are bigger because manufacturers can charge more which equals more profit. Or what typical owners say-they don't build normal sized trucks because nobody would buy them. I think it's the former. I bought a Tacoma, partially because I can reach over the bedsides. We have a GMC 2500hd at work that is borderline ridiculous, you can't reach into the bed very far WITH the tailgate down. Over the side? I can barely see into there and I'm 6" tall.

It was me I waved but you high hatted me I know how you are about those folks driving FORDS ,, lower would help throw my cap in bed of mine and I cannot reach it from the ground on any 3 sides, Keep a stick in there to rake stuff out. LOL When you going South

We have 23 F150 4x4, and that's one complaint I have, it's too high! But I'm only 73, so I can still jump in the back. I kind of wish it had the bumper with the step in it, for when I get old!

Both the reasons you give are perfectly valid but they go hand-in-hand. All the manufacturers I know of that produce pickups are shareholder-owned, for-profit companies and the number one goal of for-profit companies is to, well, make a profit. The best way of doing this is to produce a high-margin product that lots of people want to buy and full-size pickups are a prime example of this. There are of course people like yourself who want smaller pickups but for every one of those folks there are 3 or 4 others who want a full-size pickup and the companies are more than happy to oblige.

To change the oil in my daughter's Escalade I had to use a short step ladder to access the engine compartment. The hood height is just below head height on these new trucks.

I'm hoping to see the return of low riders.
I wonder about the safety of the monster trucks and mpg. How safe is it when the truck runs over a car.
