F 20 magneto timing

In order to get the tractor started, I have to turn the crank from the bottom as fast as I can to at least the 3 o'clock position. Any less than that and it is a complete waste of time and effort. It runs very well after it is started. Would this indicate that when the mag. was reinstalled, that it was installed one tooth from the ideal position?

Instead of guessing, start by identifying the TC marks on the flywheel, and set the impulse coupling to snap precisely at this point.

Now, if it still starts hard, you have eliminated one possibility, and the problem is wires, plugs, or the trouble is in the mag itself.

I’ve used paint pen maker, on front crankshaft pulley and engine block after finding TDC with no. 1=spark plug removed . The marks on flywheels on my tractor are impossible to see. cCrank two or three times to confirm TDC .
Set your magneto timing . As manual

You can use timing light with 12 battery to confirm running engine ,the mechanical advance on the magneto is working. If you want you canc paint pen the location of the advance location on block with timing light for future reference.

Incidentally, can you hear the impulse coupling snapping? It is your only safeguard. If you're going over the top and pushing down that's a good way to get hurt.

IF the impulse coupling is stuck, that means the spark will occur wherever you have the spark lever set, and NOT at top-center, which is the safest scenario.
