I see the mags have a serial number on them. Is there any way to match a mag number to a tractor serial number. The reason I am asking I bought a F-20 at a farm sale and it has a M or H mag modified to work on it. I did buy a mag off the hay rack before I bought the tractor. Was just wondering if it was the one that come on it.

There are serial number lists for some of the IH magnetos , much like the tractor serial lists. Unfortunately, I don't know of any lists from before 1939. If there were old enough lists, you might be able to determine about when the magneto was built. If the age matched closely the age of the tractor and were both found at the same farm, you could reasonably guess it is the original.

By the way, the first F-4 made in 1939 was 406358.

F20's FA4688 and below used the E4A mag with the E4A-500 automatic impulse coupling, from there up to FA-11270 they used the F4 mag but still used the E4A-500 impulse coupling, all of them after that used the F4 with the impulse fully covered by a band.
The Bosh FU4 was also available as special equipment.
