F-450 dually fuel mpg?

Got a 450 4x4 dually for pulling a Big Tex trailer. When I got it I pulled the trailer empty against a wind and got 10-12 mpg's. I was told that after about 30,000 miles it should improve. Its a 2007 6.4 diesel. Now empty nothing towed its showing 9.8 mpg. Thats the gizmo on the dash that calculates mpg or distance remaining. Is this correct. Any body have comparable results?

Friend of mine has a 2008 450 with dump bed, with a cab protector. Uses it mostly short trips and on the farm. Gizmo says 6.5 MPG. had it on one trip. Got 8.5. starts good ,good power, runs very clean. TERRIBLE Milage..

If you are running in Wyoming they are probably using a Winter Blend now which can effect mileage. 9-12 is in the Ball park for sure.

Is the Truck an Automatic?

6 Speed? If it is a 6 speed the RPM range your running through each gear can sure effect mileage.

Son's started out getting 12 empty and 10 with the gooseneck. Now after 30K it's down to 10 empty and around 8-9 pulling with the lowest at 6! Mileage is terrible and Ford can't seem to figure out why it went down, said they all do that.

Sounds like the old F350 with a 460 gas is doing fine at 7-8 mpg on $1.85 gal gas compared to over $3.?? fuel.

It's a combination of the ULSD and probably winter blended fuel also. The mileage on all my diesel trucks dropped 2-3 mpg with the advent of the ULSD. Factor in the winter blended fuel which usually drops it another 1-2 mpg. My mileage really suffered (4-5 mpg)when running biodiesel, but I have older mechanically fueled engines.I did pick up a little better mileage since using Lucas fuel treatment.

That is why I didn't spend an extra $7,000 for the diesel engine last fall when I got my truck I get 11.2 loaded down and around town with the v-10 and still hook up a trailer and pull anything that I want I am a Ford fan but they really screwed up their diesel trucks

I get about the same out of both of my V10s. 10-12 loaded, 13-14 empty, most of this is short trips.

that may be all it gets but to me thats poor performance for the size truck it is, how much does that 450 weigh?, by comparison, i drive a peterbilt 330 its a tandem axle dump truck empty weight is 21340 lbs, loaded is between 50, and 54,000, fuel milage was 9 when the truck was new in '05, now that i have 200,000 miles on it it gets 8.3,the truck has a 318hp cummins, with a 8LL transmision,[ similar to a 15 speed] , while a 330 series is usually a single rear axle truck, my point is the truck is at least 3 times the truck that a 450 is with the same millage, seems like that ford should do better, also where are you guys getting a 185 gas? its still 254 here

You must have an '08? The 6.0 was used in '07. I have an '08 F350 4x4 dually with a 6.4 auto and 4.10 gears. Milage meter in the dash is real close, actually reads a little less than hand calculated. If I drive it easy, I will get over 19mpg empty, but with 10 tons behind it, I get about 9. It does a little better than the 2000 I traded in, and is so much quieter and smoother. I'm real happy with this one, probably will keep it a long time.

Thanks for the reply. Oops, I did get it in March this year. Dang, can't remember if its 07 or 08 now sometimes. 19mpg Wow! Thats a glow in the dark compared to this one. Btw,ts a auto.

That mpg stinks.


It makes me glad to drive the duramax and get 18-22 empty. Now, it's not a fair comparison as it's only a 2500, but still it easily pulls 12k. I won't be replaceing it with a new diesel given the current technology, controls and resulting mpgs.

I agree that Ford has gone out of their way to screw up diesel trucks over the past 6 years! But the EPA and various tree huggers have also helped a lot. You will note that in Europe they have different looser environmental laws and diesel vehicles get 40-60 mpg and trucks in the 20-30 range.

I can regularly get 18-19 out of it, but when I say drive it easy, that's setting the cruise at 60-62. When the RPM goes over 2000, it makes a big difference. My '00 was the same way, but I never got 19 out of it. It's tough to get good milage from any brand of '08 diesel since the silly DPF and cat converters are plugging up the exhaust. Ford got a bad rap on milage numbers since their '08's were on the market before the others. Dodge and Chev aren't doing the best with thier '08's either, and it's all because some libs didn't like diesel smoke, which just falls to the ground anyway. Big government at work.

Yep, it went back up and then mosied back down. Glad fuel went down.
