F-5 serial #

If you are looking for the number for title purpose's, vehicals of this era used the ENGINE number. Back then the engine was thought as the most valuable part of the vehicle. There was no VIN system.

Thanks for the advice. Where on the block should I look. The truck is in a barn and dust covered so it will be hard to recognize a number unless I"m looking right at it.

Older vehicles used serial numbers which is basically the same as the vin and while some states used the engine number others used the serial # I have seen them both ways.

It"s a flathead 8. I"ve got a spare engine on a skid in storage. I"ll have a look at that first and see if I can find it. Thanks for help.

The VIN or serial number is located three places on your truck from the factory. You'll find it on the data plate that is pinned to the engine side of the firewall, it is on the rating plate inside the glovebox door and it is stamped into the top frame rail somewhere in the engine compartment.

It will look like this: *98RT 123456* (V8) or *97HT 123456* (I6) and the last six digits will be higher than 140,000 if it is a 49.

1950 continued to use the same prefix, but the six digits will be above 280,000 approx.

Ford quit using engine numbers for ID when the F-Series trucks came out in 1948 with the 8BA/8RT.
