F20D rev counter

Carrying on with the refurb of my F20D I wont to get some of the dashboard lights and the rev-counter working. The mice have been in there an chewed through a few wires, I am about to start re-joining them. The rev counter appears to be just driven by a cable with no electrics ? The cable appears to be ok at the dashboard end, where is the other end and is the any likely remedies ?

If you follow the tach cable toward the front of the engine you will find a little drive unit located on the front of the engine gear cover. I would suggest you remove the cable from the hour meter, crank the engine and see if it turns. Might even try slowing it down with your hand just making sure friction is not what is allowing it to turn. Then go from your findings.

Hi Winston,

I have now got the dashboard removed and checked the little gearbox that turns the needle and that all seems ok. I started the engine up and held the square drive cable that appears up from the engine and that doesn't turn when the engine is running. I tried to gently turn the square cable by hand but it wouldn't turn. Guess the next job is to trace the cable through like you said to see what is going on at the other end. I have had a look at my parts manual but cant see were it starts from, will it be the gearbox bell housing or much closer to the main engine ?

It is on the front of the engine.

OK found that now. Unbolted it and took the cable out and it was broken about 4" up from the drive unit. Now to see about getting a new cable.

Just ordered the hour cable from Hoye's now to wait and see what the postage to England will be for an $11 cable..........

My new hour cable has now arrived from Hoye's. Excellent service as always. One question. The inner cable that does the actually driving of the rev counter / hour counter looks a little bit dry. Should I oil or grease it or would that just get pushed up into the dash and clog it up ?

I'll not confess to being a cable technician so take by suggestion with a grain of salt. I think you will find the inner cable can be slid out of the sheath from one end. If you slide it out a ways and find it dry "I" would put a light grease or oil on it. If it looks lubed then put her in service.

The YTOG has the free parts manuals.
With the exploded diagrams in the parts manual, you would need to look for fasteners to remove and to gain access to where the tach cable is routed.

Thank you - as parts diagrams/manuals go, this is not the greatest but I’ll take things apart and give it a go! Have ordered a cable so hope that’s the issue.
