F40 Hydraulic Fluid Change

I have a '57 F40, which needs a hydraulic fluid change. Things are still working, no leaks but its been a long time so I need to get this done. I'm not going to tear the tractor apart just drain out the old and add new. Let me know if I've got the process correct. 1. Get the tractor hot 2. Open drain plugs and allow to drain overnight 3. Clean/replace plugs 4. Add 8 gals of GL-1 fluid. A basic question but where does the fluid get added? Is it through the cap (transfer plate) under the seat? Thanks

That is basically it. While you have the drain plugs out clean the magnets off.

If you have water in your oil or sludge build up you will probably want to also flush they system. If this is the case follow the flushing instructions at the below link.

The fluid is add through a filler plug near the shifters. See picture. (this is a To-35, and my MF-65 also has the fill here so I pretty sure the F-40 is the same)... Note: it takes a while for the fluid to level out of the transmission to the back end so give it some time to flow it only has a 1/2" hole to flow through. So save off on the last 1.5 gallons until the fluid levels out.

Oil Cleaning Procedure

Awesome. Thanks for the reply to my questions. I know this has been covered in the past but couldn't find the thread. This forum is so helpful.

The filler plugs do vary slightly in position but they are close to the Gear Lever on top of the Box. and it is a large "nut". Use 10W/30 Multi-grade oil rather than the GL1 90W which gets too thick when cold and causes problems with the hydraulics when it is cold. This is a better oil than the original and lubricates everything and stays thinner when cold. When you fill up with new oil, only pour in 2 gallons at a time then leave 10-15 mins for it to level out, if you don't it could overfill the Transmission and run into the Clutch Housing if the seal is worn, it will then get on the Clutch and the Starter. Try to change the oil when it is HOT after working as this will allow the oil to run out and carry a lot of the loose crud with [email protected]
