Face pin wrench set

I have the OTC tool and have used it on several 580k cylinders and agree with the previous comment that it is hard to keep the tool in place
I found it works best if the cylinder is horizontal and you are applying a downward force
I have also heard of some heavy equipment mechanics using a large pipe wrench

I use a 3/4 thick steel plate with a U shape cut out of it.I straddle the piston rod with it laid up against the pin wrench, either the one piece ones I have,or the clamshell type. Then I put a porta power against it and apply just a little pressure.Just as easy to wedge a piece of wood between it and the loader arm.Devise any way possible to keep the pressure on the pin wrench.Once you get that initial snap loose it will come right off.If the big pipe wrench guy has been there before the gland nut might be a little egg shaped and come hard all the way.

I forgot to say,if you don't have a hydraulic bench leaving the piston still pinned in placed is the easiest way to keep from chasing it all around while you try to work on it.Most times I never even remove the barrel from the machine.Sometimes you have to,like on internal boom pistons on some backhoes. If you are worried about putting the piston rod back in without damaging the new seals on the internal barrel threads I have kind of a sneaky way around that too.

Good info. On the parts, I’m liking Broken Tractor so far, we’ll see what we get.
The parts manuals have twisted my bean, no numbers on the cylinder glands that I can find. Gambling I have a two piece piston.
