Fairbanks-Morse Mag

I'm having more trouble w/ my magneto...it only puts out spark for a minute or two, than cuts out. I think I need to replace the breaker points & condenser. While at it, I want to buy a new cap & rotor. It is model FM-J4B. Where is the best place to buy these items? I found them on this site, but, the cap alone is $60! I didn't know if anyone else carried them cheaper? I can get the mag rebuilt for $94 + shipping, so, I'm weighing my options. Thanks

had the same problem so i switched it over to a distributer its a lot cheaper and it runs way better. good luck

A rebuild for 100.00 will probably not include a new outer or inner cap. That is the average price for the points, coil and condenser.

If it runs ok for a while, then kicks out- maybe....heat is building up...ie, coil ($60) is bad...just like on a distributor system. Points are a visual item...are they pitted, scarred? Why do you think the cap is bad? Bottom line- send the mag to a reputable shop if you want to keep the tractor original. Get a definite price for repair. Switching to a distributor system gives you a more dependable starting system, costs bucks, more than fixing the mag.

I never have magneto problems anymore. When one needs service I UPS it to Belanger"s Auto Electric {mainelymagnetos.com} and it comes back like new.
For all my tractor electrical needs I call The Brillman Company 1-888-274-5562. John can answer all questions about electrical problems and the products he sells. He has a catalog worth getting.

Problems solved.
