Hello everyone, i have a 1947 Farmall M. it has a 17 steering wheel. the rubber on it is gone and its just wrapped in tape. i could buy a new one with rubber on it but i'm wondering if anyone makes a soft wrap for it
like they do cars ? not trying to be wimpy but i'm on a medication that make my hands hurt and i dont think a new stock wheel would help me. wish they made a soft cover for it in black. does anyone know of any such wrap
? appreciate.

I got something similar once for bicycle handle bars. I don't know how long something like that is going to hold up on a tractor steering wheel.

The easiest way, but not beautiful, is to purchase hose like in the link slice the hose longways to allow it to be slipped on the bare metal of the wheel. Cut it a bit long and glue it to the rim with 3M weather strip adhesive. (yellow glue in a tube). Trim the end to a nice fit full circle before gluing. Use electrical tape to wrap the hose overlapping 1/2 the tape width. Let it cure for a few days. Should be good to go. Jim

I think you can find a place that will re-rubber your old one. Likely won't be exactly like factory when you get it back, but real similar.

I'd start by doing that. And get back to what should be. And then, if you want to, look into putting some sort of steering wheel covering over that. If you don't like it as it is after the new rubber.

What I'd do. Or maybe find a good used steering wheel instead of sending yours off to be re-rubbered.

I have heard of spraying them with that plastic undercoating or bed liner stuff till it got back to shape and size then fit with sand paper or grinder for smoothing. I guess if you went that route you could go as ig as you wanted and fit well for your hands or so a soft cover would fit well. I don't know if you can shield and spray on the tractor or not thoug any drift or over spray would be hard to get off if you can. Removing the steering wheel can prove to be a challenge also.

If you have a favorite steering wheel wrap for your car, get the same one for your tractor. There's nothing saying that those wraps can only be used on cars.

Is the plastic completely gone from your steering wheel so it's just metal rod? Get a new wheel with plastic so it's easier to grip, then add your favorite wrap to it.

thank you everyone for responding and the good ideas ! this will give me some things to try. also i will maybe get a good set of gloves. but i think a new wheel to start with is in order.

Replacement steering wheels are not expensive for common tractors. I have put new wheels on all my tractors except the wd45. I wait for Steiner or Tractorpartsasap.com to send out coupons.

I did this using 1/2 inch inside diameter clear sprayer hose because I need a nice fat grip with my arthritus. It works great and it's cheap!
