anyone have one of these tractors ? do they hold up well ? im looking at one to feed hay with.

Dad bought his with 200 hours on it in 1979. Currently has around 9500 hours on it. Rebuilt the engine around 7500 hours, transmission and rearend gone through about the same time (bearing went out and ran through the gears). It's on it's second set of rear tires...

As for loader work, they are not easy to shift back and forth... we prefer our 1256 for the loader.

I have a 1086. It is a decent tractor. They have good motors. A 1086 though is a bit big for feeding. Don't get me wrong they are work horses, but I think they are just too big for smaller tasks. Try something like a 766.

Dad's was the main farm horse for about 5 years, it was the biggest of our tractors. Had the TA rebuilt right after we first got it, replaced the clutch at the same time because you might as well when you've got the tractor split.

She's a bull. Great for tillage, drop it in gear and she'll go all day. But the controls for hydraulics and gear shifting move pretty hard, and I think that's normal for this model. Look over the wiring pretty good, most of these machines have the start safety switches bypassed and the instument cluster (especially the speedo/tach) is really prone to lots of problems.

But she's still definitely one of my favorite tractors to run!

Ours is actually quite good on fuel - uses an amount comparable (probably less than) to a much smaller tractor. That 414 ci turbo diesel is perfect!

Many people in our neck of the woods (back in ND) have 200 horsepower or more in a FWA tractor for feeding cattle. Several have gone to pay-loader with a grapple fork even!

Working with big round bales in snow and slop will require a large-frame tractor with enough weight on the rear for traction. A 3-point with a bale fork is ideal!

thank you all , for all the replys. yes, i know the 1086 is a horse, 130 horses for feeding hay is a bit much, but the price was right, and after looking at the smaller tractor's, i could buy the 1086 for thousands less.

ha! i live in central missouri, im running cow/calf, and my uncle just down the road a'ways runs a 1486, 1206 806. and 966... he's just a wee bit too far away to just go borrow one. so this is what i've found, it runs good, dash lights dont work, brakes are good, no blow-by, needs a paint job, but i dont think the cows will care about the paint.
oh ! the a/c works ! hydraulics seem to be fine. yes, three point hay stinger is what i'll use, no loader.yet.

this tractor i've bought, yes you must push clutch in, for her to start, most of the gauges dont work, but doesent smoke, and no blow-by. hope she'll last a long time.
maybe i can fix the gauges, and slick her up a bit.
