Farmall 300 carb question

Hello all. New member here. I recently acquired a 1955 farmall 300 that has some carb issues. At the very bottom of the carb is a "bung" which on my carb is open into the venturi (see photo). My carb has had some sort of epoxy shoved into that hole which didnt hold. Ive searched and searched as to what this part is to no avail. Im speculating that this part is supposed to be some sort of check valve which allows overflowing fuel out but no air in. Ive considered drilling and tapping this bung and putting a taper plug in with sealant. Does anybody see anything wrong with that idea?

This is the photo that i meant to attach.

That is a called a drip plug. It's purpose is indeed to allow fuel to drain out from a internal fuel leak when engine is not running. It will also leak fuel out from a over choked condition or even raw fuel from a normal choking condition . It should have a felt plug in the hole and a welch plug with small hole in it.

You could plug it and it would not affect the running of the engine at all but if your carb leaks internally when engine is shut off you can end up with gasoline filling the whole interior of manifold.

I recommend you get a drip plug kit and install it. Even a regular welch plug and drill a small hole in the middle and I have cut many a felt plugs with a hole punch when I didn't have a factory one available.

Welcome. That should be open. They usually have a bronze or felt filter. It's there to allow condensation or gas drain if the float needle doesn't shut off. Filter is to keep from pulling dust. The venture is in the upper section.

Thanks alot for the quick replies! Ill see what i can come up with. At least i have an idea of what to look for now.

Cut a strip out of an old TEE shirt, roll it into a cylinder and stuff it into the hole. Install the welch plug and you're good to go.
