Farmall 300 Hydraulic Pump

Hey all, just curious as to how big of a pain it would be to rebuild the hydraulic pump on a 300? Found a really nice, solid and complete 300 for $1,100 w/good tires but the pump doesn't work. I am not overly worried about it cause I think that's a solid price for the tractor but I haven't messed with these pumps before. Thanks!

I dont think them pumps were meant to be overhauled. They were usually replaced. Have u checked the pressure on the hyd outlets ?

Could be the tractor is out of hydraulic oil. Common for the seal on those pumps to go bad and loose the oil into the oil pan. Its worth a check before buying a new pump.

If the system was low on fluid, and you fill it, the pump may need to be primed to get intake oil flowing to the pump. Put 15 PSI (not more, use a regulator) to put pressure in the reservoir. Then start it and move the hitch lever to stimulate flow. Be careful to assess if it is pumping oil into the engine. If it primes, and makes hydraulic action, it is worth putting a seal in the pump. I did not go through the complete checkout process but at a second look I believe if you buy the pump through All States Ag Parts YTs parent company they do not charge shipping for that part. YT charges a little over $50 flat fee for shipping.

That is a pretty good price for a 300 if its a decent looking running tractor - especially if the tires are good. The base price on the pumps is about $600 for a new pump - I have checked several places and there aren't any to be had cheaper. You can find more expensive units but I think they all come from the same source. Rebuilding the pump isn't a possiblity unless you can build you own parts.

I would caution against buying a used pump unless you have seen it actually work - the newest original used pump for a 300/350 is now 65 years old - and they have all seen lots of use.

I would start with checking the oil first right side of tractor below and just ahead of the touch control valves. If low (or empty) fill it with any trans hydraulic fluid you have available - no need to run Hytran in these pumps especially if its leaking. If it is dry or very low I would remove the screen and clean it before refilling (screen is in the bottom of the reservoir and removing it drains it. When I bought my 350 20 years ago it a LOT of dirt and even some hay around the screen and the oil was horrible

My pump was weak and I ran it that way for 20 years with the primary use being the cylinder lift on a sickle bar mower - it could handle that but even the power steering was weak and occassionally using a little IH 33 loader. When we moved up to a V rake I wanted to use the 350 on it but the hydraulics were too weak to run it - I started looking for pump but instead bought a slightly bigger tractor (460) with good working hydraulics and came out money ahead by selling the 350 for more than the 460 cost.
