Farmall 400 Question

Were any of the Farmall 400 row crop tractors built with a fast hitch? Most of the ones that I see only have hydraulic remotes on the rear.

They were available. Think then the hitches were sent to dealers on pallets for installation.

D Slater is correct. Ours has the early fast hitch with a Pitch cylinder under the front of the hitch where the main arms attach. the second type has a Pseudo Draft control handle that was a mechanical attempt to do graft control. I like the cylinder equipped version. Jim

It stands to reason that being the first series of "large" IH tractor to have the hitch available, that you'd see more swinging drawbars.

Farming was different in the 50's than it is now. It took time to adopt new technology because most farmers didn't like change, and didn't have the cash to spend on it anyway. You had drawbar equipment and weren't about to buy a whole new line of equipment for this unproven new fast hitch contraption. The tractor itself set you back for years. It's not like the bank was just throwing sacks of money at you like they do now.

I installed one on a 400 last year and seen one in a salvage yard with the same hitch as pictured.

This is the hitch on my 400.
