Farmall 400 value?

I thought you meant it was like a totally different layout. Originally I think the x00 series had a regular automotive type ignition that you turned against a spring past the on position to crank. The x50 series has a on/off ignition and a push button start, not sure if it was configured exactly like yours. I want to say the key was in the panel opposite of the tach below the removable dash. We had both a Farmall 300 and 350 on the farm when I was growing up. I am pretty sure the actual key for that ignition is attached in the link. Universal ing. key
The black dash may make it look different. Mine was sort of gray. Again, no doubt a new paint job.
The black button still confuses me. Mine didn't have one, nor did Lyle's.
My first 400 had no hood over gauges and I can't remember Lyle's having one.
As for key, it's a joke. That key system just keeps an honest person honest. I had a short screwdriver with 1/4" wide blade. Stuck it in the keyhole and start right up. Like said, my Oliver has the same key thing. Auctioneer wasn't available for the Oliver. I wanted to hear it run. Got a screwdriver, stuck in the keyhole and fired it up. Plastic centers for both. Keyhole on the Oliver is sloppy, and the key will fall out. So, I have screwdriver to fit just in case and have the key on a chain wired to the steering column.
Choke, fuse holder, light switch and key are painted red. They were not red.
This 400 is a 6-volt. My first was a 12-volt. I had the generator rebuilt and terrible today is to find someone who rebuilds generators and even starters. WD45, Delco Remy starter. Found a person who will rebuild any generator or starter far cheaper than you can buy either. I NAPA would rebuild a starter for my WD45, but they won't, not any more.

Starter button?? The tractor is nearly 70 years old, things get changed. I am fairly certain no x00 series gas tractors came out with a 12 volt system, the diesels were, if it was 12 volts it was converted. The x50 series is when they were changing over to 12 volts, our 350 was 12 volts but some were 6. If you it didn’t have that hood over the dash then there would be a small bulb or open socket up there. That is the only configuration of sheet metal they made for them.

Restored one just a year ago and the fella planned on keeping it with his collection but another collector saw it and he wanted it to finish his collection of the 100 series and the 50 series and offered him $6500. He sold it. The dash looks like its black in the pic. They should be battle gray. That's what I call the color anyway.

Internet skipping. Found a few around $3000 and $4000. One sold for $7650.00. One I'm sort of questioning. Said pure Mint Condition, sold $26,000.00.

Not a starter button. Auctioneer started it for me today with just the key. That key looked identical to my Oliver's. We didn't try the button. Auctioneer said he'd ask. He said "she" was selling the tractor. I have my doubts of "her" knowing.

Wish I would have been on the selling end of that $26K one. They got their restoration cost back out of that one plus some fat money. If any sell for that price again I would blame it on a bumped noggin.

Maybe they put a horn on it? Not sure about the x60 series, but the x06 I think had them and I know the x56 series did.

Thanks for the confidence. I still have the bid at $2500.00. BUT. She now wants the brush hog sold separate.
It all depends on how badly you want it, and assuming it is in good mechanical condition. I would not be surprised to see the tractor go for $4K or more and the Bush Hog around $1K. If you get the tractor alone for $2500 I'd say you did REAL GOOD! Just remember, the real bidding at an online auction happens in the last few minutes.

I know about the last few minutes. Bought a 1964 Oliver 1650 with heavy duty end loader. Last day it was at $3500.00 and bids coming in. 30 minutes to go, the bidding went wild. I got it for $4100.00. Brute of a tractor.

Owner changed her mind and minimum bid is $3000. Women for you. Right now, I have the bid at $3000.00. No one was bidding before at $2500.00.

Open House tomorrow. I'm going to take it for a test hop. It better run really good before I go higher.

Is that legal in the auction community? I didn't know you could start changing the rules of the game once the bids started.

Auctioneer at fault. Sister checked on it. Auctioneer said owner would probably come down to $2500. So when he checked she wanted $3000 for the tractor and $800 for the Woods Brush hog.

2:00 am here, no bids but mine.

Sunday, today. Auctioneer said he'd talk with her again to go down to $2500. No bids so far, so Auctioneer agreed to move my bid to $2500 if she agrees

That black button is for starting the tractor. I don't know why. The key works for starting the tractor and the key has to be turned on for the black button.

Auctioneer called me. He misplaced ignition key. I was in town, so I stopped by and handed him a "key." Yep, insert just a bit and turn. Tractor fired right up.

This is a "Key." This type of key has now worked for 3 Farmall 400s and my Oliver 1650.
