Farmall 460/560

Hi everyone,
I have a farmall 460 with a 263 (560) engine in it with fire crater pistons. Its totally rebuilt and runs well except a little skip which I think could be solved with electronic ignition because the distributor is a bit worn and I think the points open with a different gap each time. Yes I know I could rebuild it but I could also just change it to electronic ignition and solve the problem with an upgrade. So my question is which kit have you all used to convert to electronic ignition?
Also I've been told I could use a later model carburetor to eliminate the hesitating or hiccup the tractor has when you pull back on the throttle quickly. I guess some of the later tractors had accelerator pumps? Anyone have suggestions on which carburetor I should upgrade to?
Any advice is appreciated!

I have used the Pertoronix EI kit. You might want to get their coil also. I think you can purchase them from YT parts on this site. I have never had a problem with EI. I have 2 on tractors and one on a Ford engine in a jeep. I carry the points and condensor in the jeep in case I have a problem and have to reinstall. I have all the parts for tractors also just in case. I had a lot of trouble on the one tractor burning points. I also gap my plugs a little wider with the EI but there are mixed opinions on that.

Thanks for the advice. I've got a good hot coil already but I also have issues with the points burning up especially if I leave the key on by accident for a free minutes or something.

If you leave the key on it will be much cheaper to replace points than to replace electronic ignition. Don't ask how I know.

BTDT. If your distributor is worn enough that the ignition timing is erratic, then changing from points to an electronic ignition inside the distributor, like Pertronix, will still be just as erratic as it was with points. The fix is to rebuild the distributor to get the ignition consistent, then add an electronic ignition.

First thing to check if it hesitates when the throttle is advanced is the heat riser in the manifold. If that coil spring on the outside of the manifold is broken, it will act cold-blooded even when it is warmed up.

The only carburetor that had a accelerator pump was used on the C-221 engine in the I believe 606. It was released for service on the 460 but never was used in production on that tractor. I installed just one on a 460 and it did work great. It is a Zenith. Even the 706 with the C-263 still used the IH carburetor.

It used to have a working heat exchanger and it used to have the same problem. One winter the exhaust manifold blew out in that section so I separated the intake and the exhaust manifolds completely. So now they do not connect at all. I was told that's how the LP tractors are and some pullers will do that too so I didn't see any reason to keep it connected and honestly I've noticed no performance difference however the carb does get very cold and frosty sometimes. I think Im going to try the electronic ignition first and see what happens.

I will try to do the ignition first then maybe play around with venturies and jetting later if the electronic ignition doesn't wake her up. Good stuff to know Pete23. Thank you!
