Farmall 460 TA repairs

I have a Farmall 460 which is used to move about 300 round bales every year. The TA has gradually stopped working and it makes a little noise. I replaced the regular clutch several years ago it is seems to be just fine. My question is can the TA be repaired for a reasonable cost or should I be looking for another tractor? Thanks!

It will cost a few bucks to fix. but not unreasonable. Under $1000 for parts. Always cheaper to fix an otherwise good tractor that works for you than to try to replace with a (probably)more expencive tractor that may develop even more problems later.

As you stated, it has stopped working over the years, so I assume it was working. I did not see in the post where you had adjusted it, that may be a place to start.

When you say it "gradually stopped working," how did it stop working?

If you pull the lever and the tractor stops, the low side of the TA is bad, period. No adjustment will fix it. It must be replaced or repaired. This is the more difficult fix, requiring a double split to remove the TA housing entirely so you can repair or replace the TA unit inside.

If you pull the lever and the tractor keeps going without changing speed, the TA clutch was improperly adjusted and now it has worn away, leaving it stuck in low all the time. The noise is the worn-out TA throwout bearing grinding against the worn-out TA clutch fingers. This is an easier fix, requiring only a single split at the bell housing so you can replace the TA clutch at the front of the transmission housing.
