Farmall 460

How big of hydraulic cyclinder should I use on 4 row IH456 corn planter using a Farmall 460 to pull it?
Sane question, but using a 12 foot tandem JD disk?
Thanks.

Don't know about the corn planter but I think that 460 may be a little on the small side to pull a 12 footer. I've been told a good rule of thumb for a disk is 2 feet of disk for every 10 HP. $50 is supposed to be right around that 50 HP mark that would put you into a 10 foot disk.

I can pull it OK cuz my soil is kind of light but I can not lift it with my 460? Do you think I have a hydraulic problem? I know the disk is pretty heavy but thought I should be able to lift it.

Dad pulled an 11 1/2' Kewanee disc with his 460 gas. Soil was not heavy and disc was also not heavy. Earlier we pulled both a 10' light weight JD and a heavier 10' JD with JD 60s which did not have the HP of the 460.
I'd use at least a 4" cyl on the disc, pretty sure that's what Dad had on his.... not familiar with the planter, but I'd guess a 3 1/2" should cover it.

Even our M will lift the fully-loaded 4-row 56 planter with a 3" cylinder.

You've got a hydraulic problem.

You can make an inexpensive hydraulic pressure tester using a gauge from Harbor Freight, and a couple of fittings from Tractor supply (reducer and a pioneer-style male coupler tip). It may behoove you to set one up and pressure test your system.

have you changed your hydraulic filter lately. might be plugged up. does your hydraulic pump make a noise when you go to pick up the disk if it does then it is not getting the oil or the pump is getting bad. i got a good used one if the pump is bad.

Filter is new as is all the oil. I put a seal kit including new diaphrams and gaskets in the pump. The pump does not make any noise. When I try to pick up the disk, it moves a little and then just can't lift any more. I use the same cyclinder on the planter and it does lit that. Do I just need to put a bigger cyclinder on the disk?

You never said what diameter it is... I'm guessing you will need a 4". The majority of the SAE cylinders for implements were 4" dia. or bigger. Friend of mine had a really heavy Wilbeck offset that even a 4 1/2" would not lift with his 4640 JD. I found parts at work to build him one of the rare 5" that we built at one time and that worked.

it seems to me a 3 to 4 inch cylinder would be plenty for that size disk. i have a 3 inch on my 12 ft disk and no problem lifting it.

My H or MD won't lift my 13' RWA JD disc.
