Farmall 460

I have Framall 460 gas and trying to do some discing this spring. I drop the disc in and the 460 bogs down and will hardly run, just about cannot pull itself. Thought it might be the carb so I put in a rebuild kit and that did no good, Still bogs down and runs very rough under load. Any one have any suggestions on what might be the problem?

GER STRUX" per the Preventative Maintenance Manual:

ADJUSTING THE IDLE ADJUSTING SCREW

Close the idle adjusting screw to its seat by turning to the right (or in); then open one turn. Start the engine and allow it to thoroughly warm...desired idle speed ~ 425 r.p.m...the idle adjusting screw may be adjusted either in or out until the engine operates smoothly. Note: Turning the adjusting screw in makes the idle mixture leaner.

MAIN FUEL ADJUSTMENT

The carburetor...is equipped with a main fuel adjustment screw which can be used to reduce the amount of fuel going into the engine when under light load conditions. However, when heavy work is to be performed in which the FULL POWER of the engine IS REQUIRED, the fuel adjusting screw should be set five turns off its seat. The fuel adjusting screw seat...has been calibrated to provide a full-power mixture and should not be restricted by use of the adjusting needle when the full power of the engine is required.

My words: my Farmall 460 was spitting and sputtering until I did the idle adjusting thing and what a difference it made...for my tractor rides and snow plowing! You're going to 'work' yours. Maybe you have already done the above. I ask that you post back results. Good luck.

You need to make sure you have a full flow of from the tank to the carburetor. Disconnect the gas line at the carb and hold a clean container to catch the gas should see a full stream of gas from the tank. If there's just a trickle your tank needs cleaning. One other thing to check for is to check your fire to your sparkplugs. Your coil may be weak. There also may be a screen behind the fitting where your gas line connects. It could be full of crud blocking the fuel flow. Hal

I THINK MY PROBLEM IS THE FUEL TANK. RUSTY!!!!!
I TOOK OUT THE SEDIMENT BLUB AND IT WAT NEARLY PLUGGED WITH GUNT AND RUST. I REMOVED THE TANK BUT NOW WHAT TO DO? DOES "LINING" A TANK REALLY WORK OR IS A NEW TANK IN ORDER. ARE THERE AFTERMARKET TANKS OUT THERE?
THANKS FOR YOUR HELP.

If the gas aint the problem, pull the air cleaner hose off, I bought a 560 from a guy that was having the same problem I gave him the money pulled the hose off and drove it home ran great Had a pluged filter

According to some people the liners work. Those I know who have had the best results have had the tank lined at radiator shops.

GER STRUX; I would, as others have mentioned, make sure you have good flow from the tank to sediment bowl then to carb. Remove the carb drain plug and let some run to flush. If your tank is low, shine a pen light into the tank and inspect for rust/debris, yup, even leaves. The tank may be clean and you need do nothing more. Farmallhal may chime in with his 240 gas tank dilema; The liner material is flaking off giving him trouble. There has been discussion on tank liner chemicals/procedures that you may be able to find using the archives. Thanks for posting back your findings and good luck.

I put a liner in the gas tank, a kit in the carb, and inline fuel filter and the 460 runs great at full throtle and has full power. It does nto seem to run as smooth at idle or slow speeds, it seems to miss. I hooked to disc and it did a great job. Thanks your hour help.
