farmall 504 engine swap

Not very easily. 504 motor is a C-153 based on the C Farmall style block where the 200 were put in a 544 frame which is a small 656.
The right adapters and some creative work maybe it could be done. Definitely not a drop in fit.

Actually, I think it won't be too difficult. As far as I know, the 504 Farmall's rear end basically the same as the 656 rear end. Same bell housing bolt pattern as the 544 and 656 at least.

Near as I can tell the C200 will bolt right to the bell housing with no modifications. As for frame rail fit without modifications, not sure. There's a big empty space between the front of the C153's block and the radiator so there's room for a much longer engine.

That carries through to the back of the tractor. The 504 is based on the C/Super C and the 656 is based on the H/Super H.

If you look at Tractor data, you see that the 404 is a "C" based tractor with the 4 speed. The 504 series is the "300" series with the 5 speed and weighs 2000 lbs more.

Sorry Steve, that is incorrect

The 504 is not C/Super C based, we have a hi clearance model at home at it is very much a 300 based trans. We also have a 404 and that is very much a Super C based machine.

You are correct on the 656.

To my knowledge there were only 4 different bellhousing sizes from around 1939 on up. Cub, A/B/C, H and M.

If you recall the C200 and the D188 used in the 504 are all based on the 560/706/656 engines. The bell housing with the 460/656 rear plate allows a no mods bolt up to the C200 engine. In the front there is lots of space. for a slightly larger engine. The only work is to do the plumbing for whatever air filter you choose. The front of the engine should bolt up also. perhaps you may need to drill a few new holes. The rest including electrical and fuel hookups is straight and just do the plumbing. If you wish to hear what I think I believe IH was stupid in the first place putting the little C153 in the 504. They would have been much better using a sleeved version of the C200 called the C175 in this tractor. I have owned 4 of the gas 504s and they all felt underpowered. Just my 2 cents
