Farmall 560 LP help

So I posted awhile back about a 560 LP that I bought from my Father in Law. First off I don't know ANYTHING about propane tractors. The o-ring or gasket behind the gauge is leaking and I need to replace it. Where can I get it and is it as easy as relieving the pressure and changing it or is there more to it?

The seals or orings for that gauge should be available from your local propane supplier. Those gauges are used on many applications like forklift tanks and also storage tanks. I suppose you know this but the propane has to be completely emptied from the tank for it to be opened. Due to the low boiling point of propane it continues to pressurize the container as long as any liquid remains to boil off.

There is a small (1/4?) ball valve on the back of the tank near the gauge. If I open it there is pressure. The gauge reads next to zero. Can I pull the tractor outside and open the valve until all pressure is released?

The tractor had been sitting for three years prior to me buying it. With a new battery it started right up and runs good. The gauge read between 10 and 15 percent at that time. When I got it home I always noticed a faint propane smell. With soapy water I found the leak at the gauge and over time the gauge is now near zero.

If it starts and runs why not just run it empty? Instead of creating a possible fire hazard by venting it off. If it is a still day when you do that and somebody was smoking as you bleed it off it could ignite with some bad consequences from it. If out in the country it would probably be less of a problem. If in town or a burb might be more of an issue. Also how are you going to refuel it after it is empty or get it back inside with it empty. Why not just take it or drive it to your local propane supplier for your house, if you have propane heat. Let them fix the o-ring and refill to check for leaks. They can also pump off what you have and refill after done.
