Would a D312 be a good re0lacement for a 282 ? Would it be to much for the tractor and break things ? Would the 312 be worth more just sold ?

I don't know how it would work in a 560, but the D312 in my Hydro 70 is a great engine. Starts easily in the winter and is just an all around good running engine. I'd take any tractor that used the D312.

As for not tearing up the drive line on a 560 as long as ya did not get carried away with going for more then up to 100 Hp. and you wanted to go thru with the work involved sure why not , Will it be a drop in and just BOLT up No Would it be better i would say so .

The 312 is basically a "one model only" engine. It was in the 666/Hydro 70 and early 686/Hydro 86 models, and that's it. No other IH tractors used them, so they are kind of sought after by guys with these tractors either to replace an existing 312 with problems or to upgrade their gas engines. You could pretty much name your price on a good running 312.

When we were doing the DT360 conversion on the 756, the ideal solution for the front mount would have been a front cover off a D312. The mechanic called around everywhere, even went to his shady underworld contacts... You know what the first thing that disappears out of a 666/686 diesel that ends up at the salvage yard is? The engine, of course. He had a hard enough time finding the front cover off a D360 out of an 766/886. Had he known that a front cover from a 400 series was the same, he had one laying around his shop that we could have used for free...

The nice thing about a 312 in a 560 is you won't have to do anything to the front. It already has a front cover that will bolt right into the frame rails. A 666/686 has the smaller H/460 bell housing bolt pattern, so you will need a different rear cover to fit a 560. I'm THINKING any off a large frame 66 or 86 series with the D360 or 400-series engine will work. You'll just have "ears" sticking out at the bell housing because the plate itself is wider. Not sure what flywheel and clutch you'd need to make it work.
