Farmall 656 power steering

I have a Farmall 656 that the power steering has stopped working. The steering does work but it's more like manual steering, very hard to turn. It had been working fine and yesterday when it started it had no power steering. Every thing else hydraulic works fine, oil level is full. My guess is it is getting some fluid through the unit but not full flow. Any ideas

Does it have 3 point hitch. If it does, lower hitch, then at same time, raise hitch and pull aux valve lever . If the aux valve quits until hitch is raised, you have a main pump problem. If aux valves work even though hitch is raising, you most likely have a stuck flow divider valve. Hitch has separate pump and when hitch is not raising, that pump adds to aux valve circuit.

Thanks Pete I tried doing both as you suggested and the aux works until I raise the hitch, when I let off the hitch the aux returns to normal. I do wonder why everything else works fine and it only affects the steering. A friend suggested I pull a line off of the steering valve and run it into a bucket. Tried that and there was fluid when I turned the wheel but not much pressure which also leads me to a main pump problem. Thanks

OK, the aux valves do no work when raising hitch tells me you have no flow or very little flow with pressure from main pump. Since the hitch pump is mounted piggy back on main pump that tells me the pump drive is all ok also. Sounds like problem with main pump. Also, the hitch has it's own relief valve under seat but when the flow from hitch pump joins flow from main pump the primary pilot relief valve controls the pressure from both pumps so relief valve should be ok also.

Thanks I agree it sounds like the main pump. I did change the filter as it was due anyway and the steering improved a little. I think with more flow the pump works a little better but still has issues. I will pull the pump and hopefully just a bad o ring or seal if not will pick up a new pump
