Farmall 706 brakes

I recently bought a 706 Farmll and it is having the following problems: slow hydraulics, left brake grabs very hard and right brake does not work at all. Tractor has 6500 hours on it and appears to be in generally good condition.

For the hydraulics I would start with cleaning the screen with carb cleaner and replacing the filter. On the right hand side in front of the brake pedals in front of the tranny is an oval plate with 6 bolts. You won"t loose much fluid, maybe a quart or so. The screen sticks out of the filter. You can buy the filters at Oreillys for a wix. Call them first in case they need to order it. And I would check the level of the hydraulics. Check to see how milky it is. IF milky then replace. Orscheln has 303 hytran on sale for $22 for 5 gal. till the 12th. You may want to overfill it by up to 5 gal. So buy about 20 to 25 gallons while it is on sale. There is a drain plug in the tranny and also the rear end. You may not get it all as there may be some in the draft control housing. Best way to get moisture out of the oil is run it in the field for a long time on hot days.

For the brakes, I assume these are manual and not hydraulic. Check the adjustment ball by the right brake pedal and tighten it up and loosen up the left brake adjusting ball. Takes a 7/8" socket (or was it 3/4?) If you are out of adjustment then you probably need new disks or have a machine shop shave off a little of the housing. Each brake housing has a dust cap in the middle. Remove them for a looksee. The brake disks are close to 9/16" thick and they have wear grooves running from the center out. New has somewhere about 3/8" or so deep groove and if no groove then replace. You can see the grooves on the outside disk from the dust cap hole. Left one may just be a little rusted and just need some work. The brake housing is only held on by 6 bolts and is an easy job to pull. You have to unscrew the adjusting ball to pull the housing. You can then check the actuator for wear, if the balls are still good and working, and if the springs are there and OK. Then clean out any rust and crud and hit the surfaces with sand paper.

If your 706 has hydraulic brakes then look to the MCV valve and I don"t know what to tell you there but someone else can.

Post back with what you find out please.
