Farmall 826 Injection Pump Timing

I bought a farmall 826 a few months ago. The previous owner had the injection pump rebuilt a few years ago by a reputable repair shop. It is a pain to get started. It needs a shot of starting fluid but next to none will get it going. Then i need to nurse it with the overfuel cable for a while til it finally takes off and runs on its own. Plus it smokes and wet stacks. I understand that is the nature of the D-358. I checked my pump timing and it is set at 12 degrees before TDC. The book says it should be at 16 degrees before TDC. Could the incorrect timing be the culprit?

Yes.
Pete @ Just a Few Acres Farm on Youtube just did a great video series on your problem, with his 756. He had the same wet-stacking problem, but not to the extent you have. He ended up fixing his 756.

I would definitely change your IP timing to 16 degrees before TDC, then put it under a good load for a couple of hours and see if it stops wet-stacking. It doesn't sound like a fuel or compression issue, just sounds like the timing is off.

The D358's might smoke a LITTLE at startup, but then should clear up fairly soon.
Would definitely do that and a valve adjustment, if it's easy, and go from there.

Reset the timing and cross your fingers, if that doesn't help best do a compression check next. Be aware, there are NO hard parts available anymore for the hydraulic governed Bosch VA series pumps AR, BR, and CR versions, only gaskets and seals. The latest IH Neuss engines have the VE mechanical governed pump, but they are hard to find.

Yeah I follow his channel. Convenient that he made that video right around the time I’m having trouble with mine lol.
