Farmall A clutch problems

Had a sticking clutch, and followed some advice to park on a seep incline, nose down, spray WD40 ( I used brake cleaner...hate the idea of spraying lube anywhere near a clutch) onto the splined shaft before the TO bearing, and let it run forward into the clutch splines and pilot bushing.

That worked...after working the clutch I can get it into gear easily.

NOW, there's a rapping noise coming from forward of the transmission, all gears.
Pretty steady, related to engine speed.
Not final drive, not transmission, not PTO.
If I let the clutch out gently in neutral, I can sometimes eliminate the noise, but still hear it a bit.
Sounds like something interfering with a rotating clutch part.
Clutch free play adjustment makes no difference.
Sounds like it's coming from midway in the torque tube, way behind the flywheel housing, way before the tranny.

I read on a Cub forum that repeated free play adjustments will eventually cause the clutch plate lever screws to hit something or other...
I can't tell if there's such a problem on an A, but it sure sounds like that would cause this noise.

Any ideas?

2 noises that i know about with clutch. one is throw out bearing and other is clutch pilot bearing. 1 makes a noise with clutch depressed and the other with clutch out. maybe clutch pilot bearing.

wait for another reply. quite a project to split tractor. chock up wheels really good and wedge the front axle to the front of tractor (if you do not do this, tractor will flop over when you split them) ( you will need splitting stands and some help). good luck

Not too difficult to split tractor. Noise could be coupler that is located just in front of transmission. Block engine on each side of front axle to keep from rocking either direction. Block engine under bell housing and also block rear end just behind four bolts to split. Acouple of levers and rods should be good to go.Shaft will come out of clutch, look in hole from bottom and can see coupler after apart a few inches. Do this all the time to replace front seal on transmission. TOM
